Remembering

(dedicated to Iris Anderson 1905-2004)

There are no baby pictures of me
none at birth
none at three months 'cause mom's leaving
divorcing moving back home none.

At six months my granddaddy dies
in April and she doesn't know Eliot
but feels his lines spring.

They are two women alone
jobless no photographs.

I'm three before there is
one snapshot:
me on dappled pony pigtails askew
awakened from my nap
'cause the picture man's passing through
and they have the money.


Nagueyalti Warren is Senior Lecturer in the Department of African American Studies at Emory University. A Cave Canem Fellow and member of the Baobab Poetry Collective in Atlanta, Warren's most recent publications include Essence magazine and Gathering Ground.
