Resting State (for my mother)
by Rafaella Del Bourgo

If you want to remain
resting in my closet
in that pewter urn with its velvet case,
a companion to my dress boots,
caressed by the hem
of my new winter coat,
then you must come to me
when I need you.
Just for a moment,
when no clock is ticking,
drop the habit of death
and let us stand close together
so I can lay my face
in the curve
where your shoulder
meets your neck,
as your eyes scan a landscape
I cannot see.
