A Parent Call
by Ann Privateer

This year my son's birthday
coincides with the running
of the bulls in Pamplona.
Though we do not live in Spain
it is a charged summer.

In Costa Verde, California
I visit my daughter
when her father phones. She says,
"mom's here, I'll call you back."
The bulls stomp and snort.

Ann Privateer grew up in Ohio and lived the second half of her life in California. Her poems have appeared in Manzanita, The Sacramento Anthology: One Hundred Poems, and News and Review, to name a few. She has also been involved in the Area 3 Writing Project and tries to attend poetry readings to support other local poets.
