Hysterics
by Emily Scudder

Hamburgers and pasta are boring.
Apples won't fill me up.
I don't like fried eggs anymore.
You're not listening.
I don't like these choices.
When is 10 minutes up?
Everyone is blaming me.
This is the worst day of my whole life.
Will I still get my green belt in karate?

If I keep screaming I'll never have to go to bed.

Will you wake me up early?
I want more time with you.
You aren't forgiving me.
You don't sound like you're forgiving me.
I said I was sorry.
I want stories.
I'm starving because you won't order pizza.
And why can't you do a big shopping?

Emily Scudder lives in Cambridge, MA, with her husband and two children. She works as a library assistant, labor activist, and workplace mediator. Her poems have appeared in Agni Online, Swivel: The Nexus of Women and Wit, Xavier Review, Soundings East, Epicenter, and Tiger's Eye.
