Every Angel

"Every angel is terrifying"
—Rilke, "The Second Elegy"

Every angel is terrifying,
Every child too,
Dangerous miracles,
Precious destruction, loveable grenades,
We offer our selves to them and pray
They won't hurt us too much, but
Nor do we want to be saved, though this too
Is within their power, for
Salvation from this frightening love
Can only come when they disappear,
The one gift we could never
Survive.
