POETRY

The Early Morning
by Margaret Elysia Garcia

He maneuvers into my bed
With the expert charm
Of a man whose
Won this battle before
Slipping into my warmth
He whispers my name
And labels me his
I think of my clogged sinuses
And that I need to get up to pee
That once again I was too tired
To change into pajamas
He burrows into my chest
Kisses my neck and
Holds me fiercely
I love you too, I say groggily
I want a banana and some tea
He whispers half asleep
I want my Spiderman towel
He pats me, eyes closed.
I belong to his list of
Non-negotiable unconditional items
With fruit, leaves and terry cloth
My mama, he says, MY mama,
His limbs tangled around me
I release myself and head downstairs
To satisfy his demands.

Margaret Elysia Garcia lives in the Sierra Mountains with her husband and two—count them—two preschoolers. She attempts to balance the world of working from home online with doing the stay at home mom thing but frequently farms out the clan to a nearby daycare. She's also a staff writer for whoisisabella.com.
