POETRY

Snow keeps us in
by Maria Scala

Snow keeps us in
or maybe we keep snow out.
In the neighbour's backyard that tree
where your balloons got caught—
your first birthday balloons.
I got mad at your father
for letting them go.
Maybe he already knew something.

Maria Scala is a freelance writer and editor living in the Toronto area. She has written poetry and non-fiction for PoetryReviews.ca, Descant, Literary Mama, Pagina/12, Magizone, Between O and V, among others, and her blog is August Avenue.
