The New First Family

Yesterday was a day I'll never forget. And while so much struck me as memorable and amazing, I found myself drawn back, over and over, to the stark contrast between the mostly white Biden and Bush families sitting hear the Obamas at the inauguration and the multiple hues of skin color clustered around the President, the First Lady, Malia and Sasha.
I've written before about growing up in a family with two white parents, three white biological kids (including me), three Korean-born kids, three Brazilian-born kids of African descent, and one Guatemalan-born kid. We never looked like all the other families. Yesterday, suddenly, families like ours became the new norm. My kids see Malia and Sasha with all their aunties and uncles and see nothing special. Their aunties and uncles look like that, too. Like so much that happened yesterday, this makes me smile.
