"We were very tired, we were very merry,/ We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry."
That pretty much describes my week, minus the merry (unless you count the five minutes we had to celebrate my husband's birthday yesterday between work and Back-to-School Night at Vincent's school) and the ferry. But the tired part? Oh, yeah. We've got that in abundance around here.
Here's a question: how can helping out for a few hours in Josie's kindergarten class be so much more draining than teaching four college classes? Because damn, after spending the (short) day in her class, I'm ready for a nap.
I'm beginning to think that we should institute a mandatory requirement that people volunteer in the public schools before they criticize them, because I don't know how those teachers do it, day after day, with such good humor and grace and energy. For instance, you might not think that helping kids write about why they liked the red/yellow/green apple from the taste test best would be exhausting, but strangely, it was. Maybe because said kids might, say, change their minds and decide they like PINK apples instead, or rainbow apples. And really--who wouldn't like a rainbow apple better than the actual apples in front of us?
I definitely wasn't cut out to be a kindergarten teacher. Thank god for those who were, including Josie's teacher this year.
