In Memoriam: Betty Friedan
posted by Amy

Betty Friedan died today, her 85th birthday.

Starting mamazine.com was something that never would have happened without Friedan, who sparked a movement that changed the world before I was born. This week, with the losses of Wendy Wasserstein, Coretta Scott King, and now Betty Friedan, all three intelligent, inspiring, passionate, and complicated people, I've been forced to take a few minutes away from paper grading and laundry and playdough sculptures to sit quietly and breathe thanks to the women who paved the way for my generation.

Now it's my turn to go on and keep working for a better world for my two sons and my daughter. If we've learned anything in these past months of writing and publishing mamazine.com, it's that one voice can matter a whole lot.

Updated to add: Elizabeth's post on Betty Friedan makes the case for Friendan's continued influence.

My personal favorite tribute to Friedan? Becca's.
